I need plans to build a children's teepee and an adult's teepee. I would like to build the children's teepee for my grandson for Christmas but I can't find any plans. Thanks for an interesting site and your help. I do fishing, gold panning, metal detecting, 8-mile roadside clean-ups with my goldminers, and camping. Also, I help take kids on fishing tournaments and take adults from nursing homes fishing.

Hello bill. I was just browsing to refresh on out door tips for the winter. Ive been winter camping for over 20 years now and find it to be the best time of the year to head out into the great ole outdoors. Last year my son came along on his first winter camping trip and built his own version of an igloo that was lined with thick pine boughs.A very warm toasty night he spent while dads shelter was subjected to an about face wind that gave a somewhat cool nights sleep. my son is 9. Im 42. So I was very pleased to come across your informative site. Truth lies in the words "just when you think you know, You know nothing " Over the years when i camped by myself. A simple lean too shelter was suffice. However, over the years besides my son . Ive introduced a few more to the joys of winter camping. Ill be comming back to your site often as unofficially Ive found myself in the matter of being an unofficial camp guide. I really dont mind but I sure appreciate such a quality site with viable information to help myself and friends enjoy those early winter afternoons and long cool evenings. REGARDS LARRY R . B.C. I absolutely love everything there is when it comes to snow. Everything except the cold weather that is!!! Ever wonder if you really have what it takes to survive a blizzard, or an avelanche, be able to live outside in negitive 0 degree weather for long period of time, if it came down to it? Well, I have, but I sure in heck ain't gonna be as dumb to go do it to prove I can do it!!! So, instead of doing that, I like to write about it. I believe in the next few years, you will see me as this big time "Jack London" kind of author. Writting about every kind of survival story there is to conqure. And none of this unrealistic kind of survival techniques. No bears, or animals to help your way home. It will be just you and your wits to either survive or not!!! And thanks to this here web site, you so kindly put together, when people ask me why I know so much about survival, I can say most of my knowledge came from this here web site!!! And when you read my first book, you can say, "hey I know her, she signed my guestbook!!!" (I would love to see your face as you are reading this!!!) But anyhow, thank you for the info...and keep up the awesome work. I hope you add more, because I will be here often!!!!!!

Sir, Definitetly a wll designed and imformative page. I am a firefigher/lookout with 40+ years of wilderness experience and have used most of the techniques you have described at one time or another (except the fire pits, though I have heard of them). I wonder if you have ever tried this for a good warm sleep: Gather dry pine needles, or even better the tips of fresh pine boughs that have been gnawed off by squirrels. In the winter you can often get lucky and gather bushels of them from under just a few trees. Build a rock or log rectangle big enough for your body and more than a foot deep, fill this with boughs and mound it another foot. Burrow into it and sleep warm. If you have a poncho you can place it over the mound for shelter or teepee bark strips. If you have one of those good old army surplus ponchos that snaps together around the edges you can make a great sack out of it and fill it with enough boughs to make a foot thick quilt. With a foot of boughs in the rock/log rectangle for a mattress and this quilt on top of me I have slept warm in subzero temperatures

I have really enjoyed this site! I was looking for a survival skills page to learn and teach my kids (and husband..lol) and thankfully found this one. I am marking it in my favorites and plan to come back often and do just as the introduction says...sit back, drink my coffe, and relax. Might actually learn something at the same time! Thank you for putting this site together. It truley makes a person feel welcome. And I was surprised at myself...I REALLY liked Moonlight Sonata! Who'd have thought? Oh and before I go...have you ever seen "Mountain Men" the movie? There is one part where the one man says "Lost??? I've never been lost. Maybe a fearsome confused for a few days but not lost!" lol On one of the pages one of your comments reminded me of it and I thought you may identify with it. lol Thanks for the site! Becky

Bill , I am an OH(Old Hippy), as I suspect you are. Either that or you have a lock on OH thoughts amd ideals. Anyway, nice site. Regarding privacy, though, >I can remember a story that was told about my grandfather and the telephone. His position on same was that if anyone wanted to talk to him , they would walk up on the porch and knock on the door as people were supposed to do. Grandfather finally allowed a phone in his home around 1958. He hated it, but he bowed to technology. In my opinion , we are in the same place as Grandad was back then. Privacy is being redefined. You take the good (unlimited information) with the bad( limited privacy). Not sure if the good outweighs the bad, but I am sure that it all part of growing with the world. Blessed be to you and yours.

I liked your lost in the woods survival kit for children. I'm going to build one of these for each of my children. Imagine taping your signal flag to a 5' piece of string with a 1 oz fishing lead tied to the end the flag is on. Swinging the flag in a large circle would add to it's apparent size and visibility. It's just an idea... loet me know what you think

Bill, not a bad site. I can see that you're into Javascripting somewhat. That's good. But...java is dead. Go out and buy yourself Macromedia Flash 5.0. It is an object oriented program that allows you to script just what you need to. (I like sentences ending prepositions in. LOL) And the scripting is very similar to Javascript. It is fast becoming the industry standard and believe me, buy the program and a Flash book (I recommend Bill Sanders' action scripting book) and just play around. You'll be surprised by the powerful tool at your fingertips. So good luck and keep making web pages. I wrote the comment about Bill Sanders and I just now read the message saying who made the guestbook! Also, I lived in Christian County about 2 miles outside of Ozark, Missouri from 1981-1997. During that time I did use Netscape Navigator. After moving to Denver, CO I began using Microshit Explorer. While I demise using a program built by Bill Gates, I must say that it does blow the doors off Netscape. Microsoft is a monopoly because they make a damn good (ok decent at best) product. UH-oh Windows ME is shorting out and about to crash my computer again. Oh well.

Really enjoyed your contribution to the St. Patricks History, I used it some in homeschooling my child! But, I have a question that came to mind during that time--I had forgotten a little about how S.P.day came to be--but since he was a "missionary" for Christ then why do the Irish and others celebrate to the point of drinking in excession and why is there no more emphasis put on the religious side of what it is all about??? He went about for the cause of Christ,I believe, called by God-so why is that not brought out more during this day? I am not of Irish descent but I am a Christian and I had not realized until this week that he was a man of such faith!! Just a little thought I had especially since I am so against alcohol which has taken so many innocent lives and devasted so many families!!!! Keep up the good work on your sites! Debbie

Nice site, Bill. Got a great tip for you! Fill an old fashioned rubber hot water bottle with boiling water, stopper it tight and toss it in your sleeping bag half an hour before you turn in. It warms your bag and makes a great "companion" for most of the night. I even upgraded to 2; 1 for my torso and 1 down by my feet. Winter camping is the way to go for too many reasons to list!

Your tasteful music 'sweetened' my tour of your site Bill. Nice visit. I'm considering a few days of priminitive winter camping with our balmy near-zero celsius days, many degrees warmer than usual, and found your site the most pleasant stop so far and bookmarked for future visit. I'd add one tip for frozen ground campers; take a fist full of four to eight inch spikes along. I broke most of my plastic tent pegs trying to secure my small tent on frozen ground a couple of Christmases ago! A farmer's workshop some miles away from my coyote-surrounded site fixed my problem. havent lots of time today so will be back but I thought I would let you know that I do real wilderness I go every year into the Boundry Waters Canoe Area Wilderness I am also a sailor on the great Lakes 28 foot Tanzer retired from GM and ex Marine do photography hike camp motorhome tent and tarp camp and back of my pickup camp backpack and real survival starts with Larry Dean Olsen s book. He shows you how to go into the wilderness naked tho he does wear shorts for purposes of modesty and make clothes shoes eat etc. He says all survival courses start with a kit of at least 4 things and the purpose of his book was to reduce that kit to 0 things including even starting with clothes. still all books and info is helpful

Hello Bill, Nice winter camping tips. Knew most but am always open to new and better things. I am gearing up for our annual Winter Float this weekend, January 19, 20 and 21. Near Steelville, MO. We do stay in an unheated bunk house so no ground camping is involved but the float is an all day event on Saturday. We only do 6 or so miles but it takes us all day. We stop allot, it's kind of a party. We like to have our fun but everyone watches each others back. We want no accidents other than at least one person has to go "Swimming." We all take a full set of dry clothes in dry bags or 5 gallon buckets with the gasket in the lid. (Gasket Very Important!!!) As soon as someone gets wet we all stop give them a hard time and build a fire. They get dry and changed, all while we are still laughing at them, then we go on. Last year we had 20 guys go. It's going to be colder this year, so we are hoping for 14. The group has been going for almost 15 years, but this is only my third year. I have everything I need now. I will never miss one if I have my way. Thanks for letting me ramble, Robert

Thanks for the interesting page on winter camping. My friend Brian and I first went Winter Camping two years ago. Someday I will create a website on how not to do it! We're experts! Several hundred dollars and a trip to the local outfitters and we did eventually survive the weekend :) We're heading back up to Algonquin Park in February. I'll let you know if we survived :)

Hi Bill, I really like your site. I plan to do some exploring this summer in the mountains of NH, Maine. I wish you had some information on what to so when confronting dangerous wildlife if you don't have a gun. Is there other wepons you could use that would be easy to carry? Is there any type of stun gun for black bears just to disorientate them? Thanks for taking the time to put all this information together, its very helpful. Happy New Year, Bob Thanks

I once lived in the Ozarks, in Douglas County, where I gave birth to my daughter 25 years ago in the forest. I also lived in Columbia, Mo awhile. Recently I returned to my birthplace, Chicagoland. Survival in the city is harder on women and children who are homeless and I am about to become involved in work that will help them. So I came out looking for web info on survival and found you here in my beloved Ozarks. I will always remember the daisies in the meadows under a springtime full moon when you can walk anywhare without a flashlight. I'm proud of you for putting this info together. Blessings and love! -janet

Found your hypothermia info useful for our Chief Medical Examiner BUT it would have been much more useful if you had referenced the air temp/body temp chart as it was the only one that we could find in an extensive Web search for this info. We found lots on immersion hypothermia but not nearly as much on calculating survival with long-onset or chronic hypothermia. It would have been nice to know where the info came from. If you could send the reference, I'd be grateful.

Inormally sleep using a cot with a pad under me to keep the cool from away. Is there is a temperature range when this is not a good idea vs sleeping on the ground with a pad. Hi Bill - Thanks for visiting my pages and signing my guestbook. Your Christmas pages are a delight - to me it's not Christmas if it's not snowing!! :-) Right now we're having a rain/snow mix - don't know if it's going to stick or not. Keep up the fantastic work on your pages - they're great!!
