FALLEN TREE TYPE SHELTERS
There are many ways to survive in an ourdoor environment with little or no equipment to depend on. In an emergency situation the best resource you have is your mind and determination.
REMEMBER,,,, DO NOT PANIC ! !
Even after spending the better part of the last 40 years in the woods I can say that I have never been well and truly lost.
But,,,on occasion I have not know exactly where I was for several hours,,,:-).
These pages are concerned mostly with short term shelters, ones that are needed to help you survive the first night or two.
The fallen tree shelter is a quick and easy shelter to find if
you are in a wooded area. Wind and elements fell trees and they make
excellent one-man one-night shelters in an emergency situation.
The tree can be of anytype but it would be best if you could find
one that still has its foliage, such as a fir or cedar,it will make it
easier to weatherproof it.
First you trim off the branches on the underneath side to make room
for yourself and your bed; next trim the branches from the top side
to use as thatch or the sides. If you have not been fortunate enough
to find a tree with the foliage still on you can gather from other trees
to use as as thatch to weatherproof your shelter.
MAN MADE SUBSTITUTE SHELTERS
There is another option also,, you can build a substitute of sorts.
You must first build the framework similar to a fallen tree and then
weatherproof it. If at all possible you should have the open end facing some type of windbreak such as a rock wall or bluff otherwise you should build some type of windbreak to protect yourself from the elements.
Once you have the ribs up you can proceed to cover (or thatch) your
shelter. You can also use large pieces of bark to make it much more
weather proof.
(To me tho,, if I am going to that much work I will make a much more long term shelter.)
If you should happen to have a tarp handy that will work well also to cover the shelter, but I can think of many more better uses of a tarp.
