The Market Place / Cyber-Surveillance
|
|
The Web is a burgeoning marketplace where private investigators, surveillance (and countersurveillance) consultants, and manufacturers buy and sell high-tech spy gear. Companies such as Hidden Camera Solutions and Big Brother Surveillance offer time-lapse VCRs and cameras concealed in clock radios and coffee makers. For around $500, you can even buy the "Wireless Stuffed Animal Camera," a cam and wireless transmitter concealed inside a cutesy rabbit. At PI Mall, information brokers offer a wide range of personal information on the subject of your choice, gleaned from court documents, drivers' license records, and the identifying headers of credit reports (which, unlike the reports themselves, are not protected by privacy laws.) One firm will supply "a large detailed profile report on a subject, including name, date of birth, AKA's, address history, relatives, property ownership, business ownership, phone number, neighbor information, vehicle information, licenses, aircraft and boat ownership, and much more" for a mere $70. |
