BASIC OUTDOOR SHELTERS

There are many ways to survive in an ourdoor environment with little or no equipment to depend on. In an emergency situation the best resources you have are Your Mind, Your Will and Your Determination to survive.
REMEMBER,,,, DO NOT PANIC ! !
Even after spending the better part of the last 40 years in the woods I can say that I have never been been well and truly lost.

But,,,on occasion I have not know exactly where I was for several hours,,,:-).

These pages are concerned mostly with short term shelters, ones that are needed to help you survive the first night or two,
but, I can also dedicate later pages to longer term camp shelters if I get enough requests.
I will start this first page off with a basic premise, that you are aware you need shelter as soon as possible especially if it is winter time. If you would like to understand why shelter is so important,,
    check out my Hypothermia Pages

Probably one of the easiest and quickest shelters to construct and or find is a small half-cave shelter. These are not caves large enough to put a house in, just large enough to sit up ,lay down and build a fire in.

Basic Cave Shelter Cave Shelter 1

Although it is not always neccessary to build a windbreak for the front of the cave I feel that it is so easy to do so that you should consider building a simple one before bedding down. (just in case it rains or snows).

A wind break can be built by leaning poles against the face of the cave and then covering them with almost any type of small branches (laid butt upward and overlapped or interlaced around the cave opening until it is relelatively wind proof).

I myself prefer using Pine or Cedar branches for their pleasant aroma.
This will also help serve to keep the rain or snow from blowing into your cave and wetting your bedding and/or putting out your fire.

( You " DO " know that your two top priorities is shelter and fire, especially if it is winter time , don't you ?? )
You can survive serveral days without water and several weeks without food, but if it is winter, you will be lucky to survive overnight without some kind of shelter and fire.
You can learn how on to build a fire on my Building A Fire Page.

You may not always have a small cave handy but if you are in a wooded area there are ways to spend the night , or several nights.

You could build a simple Fire Pit Bed which is a very doable but simple way to make it through a long cold night.

If you have the time and/or energy another option is a Fire Pit Shelter which is a little more elaborate and expandable shelter.

You could also build a Fallen Tree Shelter that is very similar to a cave shelter and is usable in conjuction with any of the fire pit type bed shelters.

    Debris Shelters

The next option to consider is an above ground man built shelter, these are longer term solutions such as a debris lean-to , shanty type shelter up to and including log cabins.
If there is enough interest, I will build some pages describing how to build long term wilderness shelters.
