What is a Virus?

A virus is a man made program or piece of code that causes an unexpected, usually negative, event.
Viruses are often disguised games or images with clever marketing titles such as "Me, nude."

What is a Worm?

Computer Worms are viruses that reside in the active memory of a computer and duplicate themselves. They may send copies of themselves to other computers, such as through email or Internet Relay Chat (IRC).

What is a Trojan Horse?

A Trojan horse program is a malicious program that pretends to be a benign application; a Trojan horse program purposefully does something the user does not expect. Trojans are not viruses since they do not replicate, but Trojan horse programs can be just as destructive. Many people use the term to refer only to non-replicating malicious programs, thus making a distinction between Trojans and viruses.

As most of you who know me , know that I spend a great deal of time on the Internet in one Form , Fashion or another and download a lot of Programs , Beta and otherwise. Having said that , I use my Virus Program at all times. If my Computer is on ( and it is on 24 hrs a day ) my Virus Program is running. It is constantly running checks while I am downloading my email and every time I handle ( open/move/close/rename ) a file.

I am on the CIAC's Notification List also , that means when a New ( Real or Hoax ) Virus is found, I am notified by EMail. Here is the place to get all the information to do your college thesis on Virus and Malicious programs.

I am also a Member several Safe Site Programs , I automatically download and install new updates relegiously. If you are manually updating your antivirus software you should do it at the very least weekly.

I will try to cover here all the most current information on Viruses and the Hoaxes that accompany them and actually the Hoaxes are a lot more prevalent than the Viruses themselves . In Reality a Virus is rather hard to "Catch" as you will see in the text below.

I will try to give you all the information you need to keep abreast of the situation as it exists and give you the Links to places you can go to find for yourself what is current . There is also some Information on Several good Anti-Virus Programs. While most of the Information here concerns PCs and Microsoft Systems, there is a link that deals with MacIntosh Computer Sytem Viruses.

There are good Virus Programs out here, but after a great deal of experimenting, You will find links on this page the two that I personally know about. ( A.V.G and Avast.)

Anti-Virus Programs

, A.V.G.FREEWARE AntiVirus: This is the place to go for a very good FreeWare, Anti-Virus Program from Grisoft. This is the one I use and since it is free there is no reason now-a-days to "catch" a Virus.

AVAST Anti-Virus Program,To Down-Load a free copy of Avast Antivirus Software. If you download a lot of programs and files from the internet , you really need this. This Plug in will automatically check and notify you if there is a virus in any file you down-load from the Internet.

McAfee Virus Detector, UPDATE ! One of the most popular antivirus programs is McAfee. It is a very good program. It is now a rather expensive subscription program but for some could well be worth the money. I used to use it when it was free,, but being a "cheap skate" I changed, there are several very good free antivirus programs out there.

"Integrity Master" Another Great quot;ShareWare" Virus Program ( but with a higher learning curve ) is by Stiller Research. Is a very powerful, very configurable and adapative Program that once you have it set-up will let you check individual compressed files you have downloaded before you even open them. It also keeps a log of what your disc looked like when it was clean and compares it to what it looks like at any given time.
There are several other places that have FREE Anti-Spam software available. It is called "Mailwasher"and does a pretty good job of keeping your email free of Spam. Mailwasher is one.

Free On-line Virus Checks

,,HouseCall,this service is free to anyone with a Web connection. Simply click the Scan button on Trend Micro's home page, then select the drives you want to scan. If HouseCall discovers an infection, you can click to read more about it, or you can select Clean or Delete. HouseCall is the same scanner used by PC-cillin, with the very latest virus signatures already installed.

These are basically one time checks,, because The programs don't reside in your system's memory, inspecting every string of code that ebbs through your CPU. So,, you will have to manually check everytime you want to know if you are infected or not. And if you think a local scanner is slow, try checking a 2GB hard drive over an ordinary phone line.

What is a Virus ?

I will be posting information on both Viruses and Hoaxes here from time to time as new Information becomes available, so stay in touch and come back often.

(1)Under normal circumstances your computer can not be infected by simply Reading E-Mail, however my suggestion is to delete emails when you do not know who the sender is. If you recieve a file or picture attached to your E-Mail from someone that you do not know, DELETE THE EMAIL! , you can get a virus by opening and executing a File which contains a virus . The only time you should execute a program/file contained in an email is if you requested it or know it is coming.

(2) Most Viruses are caught by using a Disk from someone else which is infected . This is where most of our viruses come from . If you frequently use someone else's Disks ( such as you have a child who "borrows" someone else's Game Diskette , which was copied from someone else ) or if you are in the habit of bringing diskettes home from your work place . If the other persons computer is infected yours could become infected by simply using the Diskette to play a game or transfer Information.
